Traditional Meat Market in Brooks opens business with support from Community Futures Chinook and the Digital Service Squad

With 35 plus years in the meat retail industry, Jim Belanger saw potential for a meat market in Brooks, Alberta. The store he worked in closed down, and Jim saw an opportunity to supply specialty and locally sourced meats.

Previous customers and friends reached out to Jim and suggested he open a meat shop. With the support of his wife Vicki, they opened their business, Traditional Meat Market, in early 2023.

From Community Futures Chinook all the way to the contractors and customers, the Belanger’s couldn’t feel more supported as new business owners in their community. Primarily working with Alvaro Mendes, Business Analyst, Community Futures Chinook, the couple received the Beautification Program, Capital Growth Initiative (women’s program), Small Business Loan, Digital Service Squad expertise, and business coaching.

It fast-tracked things for sure. If you have a good idea and a good business plan, Community Futures wants to help people. Alvaro is amazing; he really is. He helps you figure out how to plan and run a business, and he’s really helped us stay organized and on schedule. We’d still be in phase two without his support,” says Jim.

The two business owners also received help from Grace Evans, Digital Service Squad expert who assists businesses in growing their online presence with digital marketing, a free service offered through Community Futures Chinook.

Grace helped with all the social media. She has really good ideas and if you have a question or need help, she is more than willing to meet with you, whether it’s over email, phone, or meeting in person,” says Vicki.

Jim says it feels good to people behind you that want to see you succeed. Traditional Meat Market sells all cuts, from pork, beef, and chicken. The meat is sourced locally, from ranchers, and farmers in and around the area. The business is family run, and the couple is motivated to serve their community quality products.

The people at Community Futures are very easy to get along with, and they’re eager to help you. They want to support you, and they also want to support our community,” says Jim.
